Hahira weighs sanitation contracts

Valdosta Daily Times - 4/10/2019

April 10-- Apr. 10--HAHIRA -- Hahira City Council reviewed possible renewal of its sanitation contract last week.

The city's current contract with G Waste Management is up, and Hahira can either continue its contract with the local company, find a new company to control its sanitation services or the city could take over the services.

Discussions began at the April 2 meeting. By the April 4 meeting, the council seemed to lean heavily on staying with G Waste Management.

"I have not received any complaints from citizens in my district," said Patrick Warren, council member.

Hahira has been under contract with G Waste since 2009. Before then, the city controlled its own services until searching for a business to take over the services.

G Waste currently charges $12.25 for curbside services. Other cities in the area charge as low as $12.50 in Lakeland to $28 in Moultrie, making Hahira the lowest price in the area.

If council sends a bid out for a different company, members expressed concern it could result in an increased charge in curbside pickup for residents.

"I'm inclined to go back to G Waste," Warren said. "What worries me is that you have cities like Moultrie at $28. I don't see how someone is going to go any cheaper than what we've got."

Though it seemed certain Hahira City Council would renew G Waste's contract for another five years, it voted to discuss the contract further with G Waste, possibly having a G Waste representative at the upcoming meetings, which are April 30 and May 2.
