Public Health hosts flu shot clinic

Winneshiek County Public Health reminds the public although October is the best time to get vaccinated, residents can still get vaccinated in November and later.

Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu or "influenza."

Winneshiek County Public Health will hold a public flu clinic Thursday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Danan Lansing Building at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds.

The cost is $30 cash or check, or Medicare is accepted.

For insurance questions, call Public Health at 563-382-4662. This is a handicapped accessible building and the wait is minimal.

Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated, but certain persons are strongly encouraged to get their shot each year. Those are individuals who are at a high risk of having serious flu complications or people who live with or care for those at high risk. The flu shot is available for anyone 6 months and older.

"We do have the high-dose influenza vaccine also for those over age 65," said Nancy Sacquitne, R.N., WCPH.

You can NOT get the flu from the flu shot, the viruses in the shot are inactivated (killed). You may get some minor side effects that may include: soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot is given, a low-grade fever, and aches. These may last 1-2 days after the shot.
