Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes series in Athens

The Chandler & Brownsboro Statesman - 10/12/2017

Did you know, according to the American Diabetes Association®, every seventeen seconds someone in the United States is diagnosed with diabetes? United States Hispanics are almost two times more likely to have diabetes than non-Hispanic Whites. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently projected that one in three adults could have diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue.

I believe education is fundamental in the prevention and treatment of diabetes in our communities. Knowledge about preventive health measures and how to manage individual needs is an important component to a person's overall wellbeing. This is why I'm excited to announce an upcoming educational series relating to diabetes care and self-management that is being offered through a partnership between ETMC-Athens registered dietician, Angela Bobo and the Henderson County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Family and Community Health agent, Carolyn Tyler. Together, we will offer Athens area residents a five-week class called 'Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes'. Classes will be held on Thursday mornings from 9 - 11 am in the Bush Board Room of the ETMC Athens hospital beginning on October 12th and running through November 9th. Cost to attend the five-session series will be $10 and may be paid during registration on the morning of the first class on October 12th.

The educational sessions are open to anyone living with Type 2 diabetes or caring for some who has diabetes. Attendees will learn how to better manage their Type 2 diabetes and how to reduce possible complications. Classes will cover many pertinent topics, including: nutrition; diabetes and exercise; managing glucose; and medications. For additional information or to pre-register, please call or email Carolyn Tyler at 903-675-6130 or Carolyn.Tyler@ ag.tamu.edu.
